Why Yoga and Kids Are a Great Match

If there isn’t a kid’s yoga class nearby, you can teach them at home. All you need is patience, flexibility and a short learning session since kids (especially preschoolers) will not be able to hold asanas as long as adults, nor will they stay focused for as long.

Most of all, let go of your expectations about what yoga means to kids! They don’t care about self-realization or any of the other spiritual aspects of yoga. All they want to do is have fun. Having fun is how children learn – but you can subtly incorporate spiritual teachings into their animal poses. For example, you can talk about the ways that cobras and crows are similar and connected or how being still like a tree allows one to listen deeply.

And, be prepared to be amazed. Kids are extremely flexible, fearless, open, light and strong. What took you years to master might only take them one or two tries!

You’ll need to figure out various ways to teach kids: storytelling, music and games will stimulate a child’s curiosity and make them willing participants in what can be a very rigorous and demanding practice. Like the martial arts, which are often taught to kids as young as four, yoga teaches self-discipline and respect – skills that will carry through to adulthood.

How can you hold a child’s attention long enough to teach them stillness and focus? Start small! Use the animals and plants that many asanas are named for. Challenge kids to:
  • Be as still, flexible and silent as a tree
  • Be as stealthy (no talking!) as a warrior
  • Bark and “wag their tails” in downward dog
  • Hiss and be as flexible as cobras
  • Arch their backs in the camel pose
  • “Fly” like dragonflies (a very advanced pose for adults, that many kids find easy)
  • Show their gorgeous “plumage” in the bird of paradise pose
  • Balance like crows
  • Bring their toes to their nose in the heron pose
  • Crawl across desert sands in the lizard pose

There are so many fun ways to get kids completely absorbed in the fun of yoga! Every asana can be wealth of stories and games to keep kids engaged.

To get kids to hold their poses for longer, have them recite ABC’s, sing a little ditty, recite a rhyme or count to 20 while they hold the pose.

Frustration is a fun-killer so if your child doesn’t hold a pose properly or isn’t focused, don’t berate them. Challenge them to be the “king of crows” or “queen of scorpions” – how would a king or a queen look? Pretend you’re the paparazzi and have them pose for pictures! And, if the child is just not into it, don’t force it. You want yoga to be fun and not a dreaded assignment. Wait ’til the time is right. Young kids will often follow your lead so if you roll out your yoga mat, they’ll quickly become interested.

If you do yoga along with young kids, you can establish a practice that they will naturally follow for years to come.


10 Must-Try “Me Time” Activities


I know, I know… so much to do, so little time… but “Me Time” is as essential to your wellbeing as breathing. If you’re chronically tired, easily upset, feeling overwhelmed, gaining weight, sleepless and resentful… you NEED more Me Time.

Me Time is any period of time that you devote exclusively to yourself. No chores, responsibilities, work, kids, spouse, friends… just you, doing something you enjoy – or, doing absolutely nothing. Even if you’re as productive as a machine, EVERY machine needs to be shut down periodically for repairs and maintenance. Don’t wait until things go wrong to start taking care of your energy needs – start today, with a scheduled block of Me Time!

If you have trouble allowing yourself to take Me Time, then plan it!
Work it into your schedule as a non-negotiable time block, however long or short it may be.

Here are some worth-it Me Time activities (and non-activities) for you to enjoy and recharge your batteries so you can enjoy life and perform at your peak levels – and, help you prioritize what’s really meaningful in life:

1. Move

Take a hike! Ride your bike! Move your body! Walking, alone, in Nature, restores the spirit. You don’t have to go far, or on some epic hike in the wilderness. Even a stroll around the neighborhood will do you good! If you want, run. Or ride your bike. Or go for a swim… any solitary activity to move your body and clear your mind.

2. A long shower

(Assuming no water restrictions where you live). Once in a while, you need to splurge on a little excess water consumption to feel the hot, soothing water flowing all around you.

3. Meditate.

This can include yoga, Tai Chi and other moving meditation. In addition to unplugging for the outside world, it’s good to unplug from your mental chatter and nothing does this better than meditation.

4. Putter on a project.

Isn’t there some little project that you started a long time ago that’s still sitting half-finished in a forgotten dusty corner? Do you realize how satisfied you will feel when you finally finish it? If you spend a mere 15 minutes a day on it, it will be done in no time. While this isn’t exactly what you may be thinking about regarding “ME” time, you ARE doing this for you – getting it out of your hair, and done, forever.

5. Nap.


If you’re exhausted, a nap will energize you if you keep it short – no more than 10-20 minutes (anything more and you’ll really need to finish that 90-minute sleep cycle, or spend time all groggy and disoriented until the sleep cycle is complete).

6. Read.

Read anything that takes you away from your worries and the day-to-day. Romance, adventure, biography, historical novels, travel books… make reading a mental escape! Reading a personal development book or anything that inspires you is a great way to make Me Time productive without it feeling like being productive.

7. ALL day.

Once a month, take a Me Day. All day. 24 hours of It’s-All-About-Me, without guilt!

8. Practice a skill.

They say it takes 10,000 hours to master something. That’s 5 years. Depending on the skill, it could be less, or significantly more. What if you practiced your skill for 15-30 minutes a day? That’s going to add up fast – much faster than if you only spent a few hours on the weekend, because keeping a skill fresh and “top of mind” is more effective than occasional practice.

9. Step AWAY from your electronics.

All of them. Especially the phone. Can you do this for an hour? A day? A weekend? Think about it: why is it that you feel obligated to be available at all times? Don’t you deserve to put up a Do Not Disturb sign occasionally?

10. Get away.

You don’t have to go far – you can hide out in a museum, church, book store, cafe, the woods, on a riverbank, a pedestrian mall in a nearby town… just get out of the places you routinely spend your time in. See something unfamiliar that will stimulate – or soothe – your senses, depending on your mood.

Ultimately it doesn’t matter what you do as long as you unplug completely from the work, people, projects and responsibilities that have you “on call” all day long. You intuitively know what recharges you so do it!

And don’t feel in the slightest bit guilty about it!

Can a Nap help you solve a problem?

Go sleep on it, they say. Heck if that was the answer to our problems wouldn’t we be problem-less? No, not just any sleep will solve your problems. But intentional relaxation and “clarity naps” can!

Allowing your mind to enter a relaxed state can promote clearer processing just as meditation can. When you sleep your body goes through several different stages s of unconsciousness. During a nap we normally don’t get all the way to REM sleep, at least for long. We float somewhere in between conscious and unconscious where the doors to our minds are left open for us to explore. In this relaxed and open state, we are less prone to being influenced by the filters of our beliefs about what can and can’t work – so we’re more open to alternative and novel ways of tackling our problems.

As you lie down for your nap, think about your problem. Pose a question for yourself to answer. Write it on a little piece of paper and place it somewhere near you. Without a question it’s much harder to find an answer. Think about what caused the problem? What kind of roadblocks is it presenting to your life? Is this problem the kind that can be corrected with a little tuning or is it going to take a drastic change in outlook and behaviors? Practice some controlled breathing while you relax into your body. Concentrate on feeling the energy well up in your core and emanate through to your extremities. Think about drawing the answer from the bottom of your soul and concentrate on your question while you do.

As you start to slip into your sleep start to ask what it would take to make it right? If you don’t know the answer, ask yourself what caused the problem in the first place and think about how to avoid this situation in the future. Who else is involved with it? What do you think they would do if they were In your situation? Quiet your mind of all other chatter and focus on only this question.

Let yourself drift off, still thinking about this question.

The answer is within you, all you have to do is clear the path to it.

When you wake up immediately grab your paper and read the question aloud. This helps wake up the thoughts you conjured before sleep and bring them back into your consciousness. Try to refrain from letting other issues cloud your thoughts before you have fully recalled your question and its possible solutions. Think about drawing the energy back into your body starting from your fingertips and toes all the way up into your core. Fill yourself up with the possibilities of the universe and accept that anything is possible. You are an incredible being capable of anything you want to do, all you have to do is decide and stick to your decision no matter how hard it is.

Our problems are a creation of our decisions. Just as the solutions are a creation of our decisions. Nothing about problem solving is easy but if you can put your full attention and focus into processing it fully you are much more likely to find what you are looking for.

You may dream about it; you may have an answer upon waking; or, you may spontaneously have an “aha” moment at some random time of day! But trust that the answer will come, in the form of words, images, feelings, sudden awareness of something (when something jumps out at you, it’s for a reason!) or other ways… and that the answer will most likely come when you LET GO of trying to find an answer. Get out of your own way, to “hear” what is being “said.”

Cleaning is first importance in preventing infection and helping wounds to heal

First, wash your hands very well with soap and water. If the wound is bleeding or oozing, wear gloves or plastic bags on your hands. Wash the skin around the wound with soap and cool, boiled water. Now wash the wound well with cool, boiled water (and soap, if the wound has a lot of dirt in it. Soap helps clean but can damage the flesh). When cleaning the wound, be careful to clean out all the dirt. Lift up and clean under any flaps of skin. You can use clean tweezers, or a clean cloth or gauze; to remove bits of dirt, but always boil them first to be sure they are sterile.

If possible, squirt out the wound with cool boiled water in a syringe or suction bulb. Any bit of dirt that is left in a wound can cause an infection. After the wound has been cleaned, apply a thin layer of antibiotic cream like Neosporin if you have it. Then place a piece of clean gauze or cloth over the top. It should be light enough so that the air can get to the wound and help it to heal. Change the gauze or cloth every day and look for signs of infection. If you have a dirty wound or punctures wound, and have never had a tetanus immunization, get one within 2 days.

NEVER put animal or human feces or mud on a wound. These can cause dangerous infections, such as tetanus. NEVER put alcohol, tincture of iodine, or Methylate directly into a wound; doing so will damage the flesh and make healing slower.

Sweating is the one of the excretory process of the body. Excess salts and waste are removed as sweat or perspiration. It also helps to cool our body. Sweating is common in people who are living in hot conditions or people are exerting or exercising. Sweat is also excessively produced when a person is under tension or anxious. To certain extend sweating is natural and healthy. In some people sweating occurs in excess even with minor exertion and some people suffer due to the unpleasant odor of the sweat. This is due to the action of bacteria present on your skin with the contents in the sweat. This is only a minor problem and there are many home remedies to get rid of excessive sweat and the bad odor caused by it.   •     You can either drink fresh juice of tomato every day.

11. Tea Tree Oil: This remedy is especially useful for foot sweating. This oil has antibacterial properties and prevents the growth of bacteria in the sweating areas of the skin. Apply tea tree oil directly onto the foot or any other sweaty areas.

12. Drink Lots Of Water: You can drink plenty of water to reduce sweating. Drinking enough water hydrates the skin and also helps to keep the body cool. This prevents sweating. Water also flushes out the waste materials through urine reducing the concentration of the waste in the sweat. This will reduce the odor of the sweat. Drink six to eight glasses of water a day to reduce sweating.
